From Paris to Amsterdam, Kilometer Zero to Versal
Before Versal started in 2002, its founder Megan M. Garr scoured the European landscape for literary journals and presses – it was a way of seeking out community. Back then, Kilometer Zero and Van Gogh's Ear, both out of Paris, were the names you'd most often hear about. But since then, Europe's international literary community has expanded outside of the Parisian enclave. Call it international, call it expatriate, call it translocal: a vibrant and exciting "scene" stretches across the continent.
In the middle of all of this, somewhat literally (geographically), is Versal in Amsterdam. Perhaps its Dutch roots are indeed in the press's DNA, because connecting cultures and communities, and building a kind of trade between them, has been at the heart of the journal since the beginning.
Versal's European press table at AWP transforms this long-time virtual trade into a hands-on exchange, not only between the presses themselves, but also for the thousands of writers visiting the conference.
Trading the Dutch flag for the European one
Since joining the Bookfair in 2009, Versal has raised the Dutch flag at its table to signal its international roots – and have some fun in the process. At AWP 2015, Versal will be raising the European flag instead.
Watch this space for updates to the participating press list and other announcements!
UPDATE: The table is full! Unfortunately we cannot accept any new presses. If you would like to be kept in the loop of future, similar initiatives, however, please let us know.
