VERSO / live jour- nal: "Calx Viva"

  • Mezrab 576 Veemkade Amsterdam Netherlands

Volume 2, Number 4: "Calx Viva"

Calx Viva: a permutable substance; used by the Byzantine Empire during naval battles to make Greek fire, and, rather more benignly, to light up stages in 19th century London.

VERSO / is Amsterdam's live literary journal. Our February 7th number, "Calx Viva", is curated by Jing-Jing Lee, a Singaporean writer and poet now based in Amsterdam. Stepping into the limelight: writer and spoken word performer Babs Gons will be presenting poetry; Bette Adriaanse, fresh from her cross-country book tour in the US, will be reading from her debut novel, “Rus Like Everyone Else”; and singer/songwriter Lily Kiara will be performing work from her latest release at the end of the evening.

We will also be collecting donations for an initiative to support refugees in continuing their education (see below).

VERSO / is brought to you by Mezrab and the makers of Versal.

***SPECIAL REQUEST***
We will be collecting donations at VERSO / for two refugee projects. Please help!

1) UvA's Humanities Faculty is offering courses to refugees to continue their higher education. We are collecting supplies to support this very important project. If you're willing and able to donate, the following items would be much appreciated: OV cards and cash to top them up.

2) Kostgewonnen collective has opened a studio space for artists coming from war-torn areas such as Syria, Iraq and Eritrea. The idea is quite simple: as fellow artists and professionals in the field, we give these newcomers in the Netherlands space, a peaceful environment, community, facilities and opportunities to create and share their work. As a collective with over 30 creative professionals we cover the costs of one of the studios for the artists to use. Assistance in the form of donations (for materials, travel expenses and lunch for the artists) or skill-sharing is more than welcome. We are also interested in collaborating with museums, galleries, magazine and cultural institutions to offer a stimulating and welcoming environment, with mutual exchange and enrichment. On Saturday February 13 2016, from 5-11 PM there is an opening party, with a suggested minimal donation of €5 pp. You are invited to come and get to know the first group of artists who have been working here for the past month. The address is Derde Kostverlorenkade 34-35, ring at "Mediaridders". Contact Shailoh Phillips for any questions at shailoh AT studiobabel.nl.
