Talks With Women Thinkers

  • Butcher's Tears 45 Karperweg Amsterdam, NH, 1075 LB Netherlands (map)

Illuminating the margins: Visual culture, the prison, and its tension between visibility and invisibility. Talk with Margarita Osipian.

The North American prison, as the space on the margins of society where mechanisms of power are heavily concentrated and where there have been recent shifts in penology, is a complex place from which to analyse and understand current visual culture. We have to re-conceptualize the prison as simultaneously embodying both a Foucauldian and a Deleuzian structure of power and control in order to understand how it functions as both highly visible and highly invisible. During this visual presentation and talk, Margarita wants to engage with larger questions about how the image itself is a tool that can function both to construct and undo the tensions between the visibility and invisibility of the prison itself, and more importantly, whether it can function as a tactic to illuminate the carceral framework.
